The Battle’s Over – Selsey and a Nation’s Tribute
11th November 2018 – 100 Years of Remembrance
Please join Selsey in a nationwide Day of Commemorative Events marking the Centenary of the end of the First World War and paying tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle and those on the home front who struggled amidst pain and loss to help ensure freedom survived.
6.00am We gather at the War Memorial at St. Peter’s Church to join 1000 Pipers across the United Kingdom and countries around the world to commence the day’s commemorations with the traditional Scottish lament played at the end of battle - Battle’s O’er. 57 crosses to commemorate those lost from Selsey will line the pathway from the War Memorial to the Church doors, plus one cross placed at the foot of the flagpole dedicated to the ‘Unknown Soldier’.
Refreshments will follow in the British Legion Clubhouse
10.00am Royal British Legion Service to be held at The Selsey Academy.
10.00am Fr. Andy will hold a Requiem Mass at St. Peter’s followed at 10.55am by the voluntary organisations’ march- past and Act of Remembrance, Prayer and Laying of Wreaths at the War Memorial.
This will be followed by tea, coffee & cakes kindly provided by St Peter’s Mothers’ Union in the Church Hall
5.45pm Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving at St. Peter’s Church.
6.50pm We process outside for The Last Post and the lowering of the flag where 1000 individual Buglers sound this historic tribute at WW1 Beacons of Light locations across the Nation and UK Overseas Territories.
7.00pm Over 1000 Beacons of Light will be lit symbolising an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of peace.
7.05pm 1000 Cathedrals and Churches will ring out their bells across the nation and beyond in celebration of Peace.
7.05pm A Cry for Peace around the World where Adrian Wilson from the Royal British Legion will join 100 Town Criers throughout the United Kingdom and beyond in an International Cry for Peace around the World with the words of a specially commissioned poem.
Saturday 24th November 11.00am – 2.00pm Church Hall – St. Peter's Annual Christmas Fair.
Sunday 2nd December at 4.00pm – Annual Service of Christingle in aid of the Children's Society.
Saturday 15th December at 4.00pm – St. Peter's Carols Round the Christmas Tree in aid of the Snowdrop Trust followed by hot refreshments in Church. The tree has again been donated by The Langmead Group and we thank them for their continued support.
