A Statement from the Rector
It has come to my attention that RSPB Pagham Harbour intend to introduce charges for the car park at Church Norton from January 2022.
This decision has been announced without any discussion with the Rector who is responsible for the parish churchyard.
I have written to the wardens at RSPB Pagham Harbour to ensure the exemption from charges for all visitors to the churchyard, e.g. mourners, families tending graves, and volunteers maintaining the grounds, as well as those attending funerals and services in the chapel.
The parish churchyard at Church Norton is still in use and is much loved by the people of Selsey. The historic chapel dedicated to Saint Wilfrid is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. Right of access to the churchyard has been established since at least the 13th century.
While I investigate the matter further, I encourage anyone who will be affected by the proposal to contact RSPB Pagham Harbour (see below) to voice their concerns.
The Reverend Andrew Wilkes MA
Rector of Selsey
